Roadblocks, fear and shelling on the road to Lviv

Lviv | With Russian troops and tanks pressing into Ukraine from the north, south and east, fleeing west in a 2012 Kia sedan seems fraught with problems.

But thousands are attempting the 540-kilometre journey from the capital Kyiv to the border city of Lviv by any means possible. And this car is my only ticket out.

I’m travelling with a Swedish couple, who don’t want to be named for this story, and their dog Diablo. “We’re happy to have you. You don’t belong here, and you need to get out. I only wish we could take more,” one of them says.
